101: HITACHI [ FLORA 270W PC8NW6-HNE4HBAB0 ]

CPU: Mobile intel(R) Celeron 1066MHz, RAM: 248MB, Xserver: Xorg is NG but OK on version3.1, Xvesa is OK (1024x768x16), LAN Card: NEC Access Technica.Ltd Aterm WL54AG-SD, Puppy's version: 4.00-Japanse alpha edition

Comment

Puppy easily recognized wireless LAN card. Code mode AES is uselessness (NG), WPA-PSK(TKIP) is OK. 11 mode = b+g, Uptime is one minute and 40 seconds in CD+USB thumb drive. Because the anti-virus software is updated automatically, and it is made to wait by about five minutes in windowsXP, it is large thanks to Mr. Puppy. I entirely use it for the WEB inspection. Hereafter, I want to go in that doesn't come by using Puppy reading the forum. Best regards.

CPU: 1000 MHz, RAM: 256MB, Graphics Card: i830, Xserver: Xorg(1024x768x24), LAN Card: wn-g54 cbmb, Puppy's version: 3.01

Comment

I installed wine1.0 in Puppy. Many Windows software run. I had a hard time in wn-g54 cbmb wireless LAN card. Prism54 doesn't operate. Ndiswrapper doesn't operate either. When installed ndiswrapper1.33.pet of the previous version, and the driver for XP of IODATA was handled, it operated. It is feeling. Move to a comprehensible place, it is OK because there is a file in wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers. 4.0 Xvesa did not use the resolution and was not good.

Comment

Though I was using WindowsXP with second-hand FLORA, because operation was heavy, I challenged KNOPPIX3.3 (CD considerably gotten ahead) or UBUNTU expecting might lightness if it was LINUX. However, it did not move at all. I see Puppy in the mail news of something. Even the HDD installation is completion because it moves according to the desire when trying.

This PC is which I used for 3.01 file confirmation at the same time when I translate Dingo. I usually use it in Win98SE as a machine for exclusive use of CAD drafting. Because it is a PC for exclusive use of the software to start by DOS. It is refrained from the use in Linux, for not touch a system drive if possible.

I mounted it and was able to use HDD or MO drive of the SCSI connection, too.

CPU: MMXPentium 233MHz, RAM: 64MB, Graphics Card: NeoMagic MagicGraph128ZV+(NM2097), Xserver: Xorg(800x600x16), LAN Card: PCcard PCI ENW-3503-T, Puppy's version: 3.01

HDD broke though my PC was bought from Yahoo auction. Recovering WIN95 and up-grade to WIN98 troublesomely left me. However, from my past investment (falling PC's repair, kid divides the liquid crystal, Japanese Sake is spilt in the keyboard, breakdown of drive in FDD), I am attached to my computer, so I set my mind on reuseing it.

As there is no CD drive that can be started in this PC, I removed HDD from it and tried installing Puppy from another desktop PC. On the console after starting Puppy from live CD, I typed below;

1. cfdisk /dev/hdc
2. mkfs -L -C /dev/hdc2
3. mkswap
4. mount -a

I selected "FULL" from a universal setup and wrote in MBR to put GRUB on/hdc2 along the installer, and set HDD to VAIO. When starting PC, message of "Kernel panic not syncing:" appeared and was not good.

Next, I selected "FRUGAL", but neither "menu.lst" nor "NEWGRUBTEXT" are found. There is "/boot" in "/boot"... I repeated trial and error. " File Not Found" only displayed, though selected "/hda1" and "/hda2" of the boot loader. When about ready to give up, I found "Puppy Linux 301 frugl" in the bottom of boot loader menu.

Linux is an initial experience for me. I study very much. It was necessary to peruse the manual in the beginning. It is not bad to use by hibernation though note PC like the fossil.

When installed ubuntu 7.1, I had the impression as if communicating in the moonship. Compare with ubuntu, Puppy has a great difference. I want to study Linux little by little with this VAIO. Report end the above.

Comment

I reported it's OK with version 3.01 before. Even 4.00Beta works without a problem. What I noticed in a difference with 3.01 is as follows.

1. Puppy started even did not attach "ide1=0x190" option from maker genuine PCMCIA connection CD-ROM drive(I think).

2. Canna started in particular up with a "hankaku/zenkaku" key even if did not set it (3.01 started Anthy in Ctrl+Space).

3. A Japanese folder and file name of the USB memory which I used in WindowsXP were displayed normally.

It is more easy to have come to use Puppy-JP for me of the Windows user. I thank development and people of translation!

108: Mitsubishi(HP OEM)[ Apricot ]

CPU: Pentium 550MHz, RAM: 131072KB, Xserver: Xorg(800x600x24), 1024x768x16 is OK, but I use 800x600 resolution as display chars are too small, Puppy's version: 3.01

Comment

My motive of Puppy's installing was because I wanted to get away from the world of Windows that a resource to demand rose whenever I revised it. I gave FreeBSD to the candidate and I read books and studied first. I got the screen which nearly 1 hour was finally seen in for setting of Xorg. However, Puppy started Xorg plainly without such trouble. A terrible single word gets convenience of the setting, lightness and the usability of the movement.

Because I heard that Damnsmall Linux 4.2 were light, I introduced it. However, the interface peculiar to this OS is distinctive and does not go for some reason nicely. If interface of the DSL seems not to be improved, I want to use Puppy after this.

But there is a problem. Internet Connection is not possible from modem. This is my (a beginner) guess, and a phone line of my home is a pulse line. May the setting of the modem of Puppy be set by a tone dial? I think.

Comment

Even if PC memory is small, it operates comfortably. I installed Firefox3. it operates with stability though it takes a while to start. Though I'm OK with SeaMonkey, new skin was not able to be installed....

About streaming replay (.pls file), the error occured in Gxine and it was NG, I installed Xine.

The wireless is steady by ten WEP hexadecimal digits. It was possible to communicate non-encrypt in WLI-CB-B11. To my regret, WLI-CB-G54 was dying an honorable death.

Visual is wonderful recently. I am especially favorite in the black style. It doesn't stand out even if the liquid crystal is old.

Anyway, Puppy is happy to use. I am indebted in the future.

111: TOSHIBA [ Dynabook DB55C/2CMN ]

CPU: Coppermine Celeron 550MHz, RAM: 128MB, Graphics Card: S3, server: vesa(800x600x24), LAN Card: Corega CB-TXD(Realtek (RTL8139C), Puppy's version: 4.00JP-Beta

Comment

I was looking for OS(environment) that operate on Junk reproduction PC only as for SVGA in the WindowsMe age, and discovered LiveCD of Puppy3.01JP.

Because I thought it is interesting for a moment, I found 4.00JP-beta again and installed it. Especially, a big problem is not and moves, too.

I installed it from universal installer in HDD with frugal.

I am BSD (chiefly FreeBSD) originally user. I know about Linux only Etch and RHEL3 of Debian. As I do not know Lunux well and am puzzled about compositions not irregular(?)by having put it in busybox, e3editor and frugal mode, I am roughly satisfied Puppy.

PET is easy and is convenience. Is it also good to use binary package though only the package management of the style that does make has been used up to now like ports? It might be comprehensible and be kind to the person who came from Windows that there is GUI front end.

After all, I'm not comfortable "root login" though I looked over FAQ.

Because my PC is not hardware that can drive the application program that originally uses OpenGL enough, either it is no problem though I use X11 with vesa. I'm not feel that slowness so much (though it is not faster).

Is it good because there are a mounter and pburn of the drive also for the data rescue when the person who is using Windows doesn't start due to the trouble? Is it wasteful to say that much?

I began still just to use puppy. I am sorry for being not able to write it is this year like a conventional impression sentence. It will variously examine in the future, and it embezzles for a while.

It feels such as a free VMware. Puppy runs in one window. Not to mention Windows, there is the MacOS X and various Unix system OS, too. http://www.virtualbox.org/ is English site, but the application becomes the Japanese indication. I do not have to burn it in CD-R to be able to mount a distributed iso file as a CD/DVD-ROM drive.

The OS type is "Linux 2.6" when I make a newly virtual machine. I can install it by installation to the hard disk as usual without doing a special thing afterward.

Free distribution of VMware. Puppy runs in one window.
http://www.vmware.com/jp/products/player/

Because VMware Player cannot generate the virtual machine alone, QEMU is necessary separately. Starting Live-CD from CD or DVD drive and install it in a virtual machine.

"acpi=off" is necessary for Boot option.

Generally my main work is enough in emacs in FreeBSD and shell. It is only an X server that I expect to a desktop. I used Windows XP + Xming for a long time, but I decided to stop use of Windows. In acquaintance with the world, I cannot simplify the perfection abolition of Windows even if I say so. Therefore I decided to run Windows on VMware.

In other words my matter is 3 of the next.

(1) Can easily use the unidentified LAN card.
(2) A 1024x768 screen and jp106 keyboard are easily usable.
(3) Can be the host OS of VMware.

I obtain a discarded computer by transfer from a certain group and use this PC as a toy. The back of the PC says "purchased 1998". When I installed Windows XP for trial, it run slow movement at first glance. If it was it, I thought that I could use Puppy easily and tried it.

It was surely an easy victory. Puppy runs with the speed of the degree not to have any problem for practical use although being slightly slow. However, it was relaxed to death and did not bear practical use when I started seamonkey. Therefore this report lets an X server of this opportunity display a screen of firefox of FreeBSD and writes it.

Postscript:
I thought it to be an easy victory at first, but after all the program with GUI was late to death and has frozen at last. After all I think that it is necessary to keep modest driving in mind with the extremely poor machine.

Further postscript:
I installed it in a hard disk fully and secured swap. In this, I came to operate stability comfortably.

My PC has not a CD-ROM drive. It started in "WakePup floppy " and installed FULL in a hard disk from a CD-ROM drive of the USB connection.

When I install VMware, warning message said that need more than 256MB. However, I ignored it and continued. Run VMWare with a 128MB PC, and is late to death when run 64MB Windows XP. However, it came to move at the speed that I could be satisfied with somehow when I sharpened contents of .xinitrc hard and made it only exec vmware.

In other words it is an opportunity for exclusive use of VMware. I think this to have used the original edition not Japanese edition Puppy.

It is high-level goods of price 420,000 yen (CRT is contained) though my PC is a machine bought in 1996, and this low spec. My PC cannot boot CD though the SCSI connection CD-ROM drive has adhered. The USB port doesn't exist naturally.

If the floppy disk cannot start, OS cannot be installed, and, up to now, only FreeBSD has been put. Then I tried WakePup floppy disk, but this was not able to be used too. The error message "Interrupt divide by zero" comes out, and FreeDOS cannot be started with this.. PC though WakePup starts FreeDOS.

Is the last method connecting a FULL installed HDD with another PC ?

Mount Puppy live-CD and copy contents onto a suitable directory. If the boot manager is appropriately set afterwards, it is possible to install Puppy.

Puppy works really comfortably. This is the old PC which I purchased for children in old days. As for Windows98, start was slow, and USB 2.0 was not usable, too and did not have the connection of Wireless LAN, it was not practical at all. When I install Puppy, I revived to the PC which did not have inferiority in a recent model functionally. It had only 96MB RAM, but were still enough at first. Thanks to grace, it is right Pupy. As the celebration that revived, I splashed out and built more memory.

I tried these 3 disrtos, Slax Linux, Ubuntu, and Puppy, but Puppy has the best convenience. Actually, in the specifications of this PC, Ubuntu mostly did not run. As for Slax, pretty good run, but "Wireless Internet connection" was never possible.

I did Multi-Boot with GRUB. Full-MS-Office is in Windows98. I do not uninstall it being a waste, but hardly use it anymore. Installation of GRUB considerably had a hard time first. I took a magazine and the article of the webs into account, but it was confused for some reason by the contents which explanation was strangely difficult, and was unnecessary. It is really easy when I understand it. I write it up soon.

I connect the Internet via WirelessRouter with Puppy, but do not recognize it in LAN in the home. The partner is WindowsXP and Vista, but want someone to teach an interconnect method of Linux and Windows.

Comment

I used the USB-CD drive. But made an error of the LiveCD start of puppy4.1 on the way (Puppy410.sfs cannot be recognized). Then I installed Puppy by manual "Frugal installation" from puppy-4.00.3-JP.

Moreover, if "irqpoll" is not specified by the start option, Puppy seems not to recognize a built-in keyboard. Wireless LAN module was recognized by the automatic operation (ath5k). However, it was not possible to use. Then, it was possible to use by unloading "ath5k", and loading "ath_pci".

Comment

It is EeePC701SD of the rumor. I bought the PC accidentally as chief of my favorite store wheedled. At first, neither cable nor the wireless are recognized though I put 400JP in the SD card. That should be so, as for 701SD, NIC is different from the Eee series that has been released up to now(In cable, Atheros and the wireless are Realtek8187SE). As a result of the trial and error, I changed into 4.1 of the latest release. As for cable, when it connected as it was, and the wireless also installed fixed PET package, the current hardship was connected with one of the lies. Moreover, I immediately used the JP-Pack of Himajin just released. At first, Puppy didn't sound, but became OK by installing fixed PET. The power supply doesn't cut even if SHUTDOWN is done, The power supply doesn't cut even if SHUTDOWN is done, and I'll strive for it. Well, Puppy run without stress and it is glad. I wanted to report ASAP.

Comment

At last, I could operate, though I wrote in my report "Non-operation" and had been left. PC is only able to boot from the floppy disk or the hard disk. There are a hard disk of the SCSI connection (FreeBSD has been installed) and IDE disk (target that tries to install Puppy). The procedure until succeeding operation is as follows;

  1. I make DOS partition for the IDE disk by using the system disk of Windows 95 that remains at hand (/dev/hda1).
  2. Make /puppy400 in /dev/hda1 by using FreeBSD, and copy the content of CD of Puppy 4.0(manual operation frugal installation)
  3. Make the GRUB floppy disk, and Puppy be started from /puppy400 of/dev/hda1.

It had been put it here before.

  1. The vmware server is comparatively moved with the machine that has power, Puppy 4.1.1 is installed on VM in full, the content of the disk in the installation destination is done in tar czvf, and it saves it in shared file puppy-4.1.1-full.tar.gz on the network.
  2. Copy Puppy-4.1.1-full.tar.gz onto /dev/hda1 by using FreeBSD.
  3. Edit menu.1st of the GRUB floppy disk, and direct "pfix=nox" to Puppy that starts from /dev/hda1 (when X run with Puppy in which frugal installed the 32MB memory PC, it is slow and is not good).
  4. Start Puppy from /puppy400 of /dev/hda1.
  5. Make /dev/hda2, and it is assumed the Swap area.
  6. Make /dev/hda3, and created the ext3 filesystem.
  7. Mount /dev/hda3 and extract puppy-4.1.1-full.tar.gz.
  8. Edit menu.1st of the GRUB floppy disk, and make Puppy 4.1.1 be started from /dev/sda3.
  9. reboot.
  10. Installation success.
  11. ne io=0x300 irq=5 is set manually and it succeeds because it is not possible to automatic of LAN card recognize it in Network Wizard network connection.

It came to operate above without trouble. Indeed, though the movement of seamonkey doesn't dully become practical use.

Comment

I tried a full installation to VAIO PC in which Windows2000 was installed from Puppy-CD. However, "Pup_400.sfs" is not found in PC and it ends. Even the CD start was not able to be done.

When "Pup_4004.sfs" is copied from CD onto Windows, it starts. However, it is not possible to install it from CD to HDD by "Puppy universal installer" because it boots reading "Pup_4004.sfs" of HDD.

On spec, I copied "pup_4004.sfs" onto USB thumb drive, then connect to VAIO. I tried to start from the CD, it booted easily. The installation completed by "Puppy universal installer".

The sound has not been emitted now. However, the Internet connection operates well for this spec (CPU 150MHz! and 64MB RAM).

By the way, 280MB of 2GBHDD was allocated in Linux-swap.

I thank to the author of Puppy linux and everybody who makes a Japanese environment and a comfortable environment.

CPU: Atom N270 1.6GHz, RAM: 1GB, Xserver: Xorg(1024x600x24), Puppy's version: acer2-puppy-411.iso

Comment

Puppy Linux 4.1.1 run in "Acer aspire_one".

I downloaded acer2-puppy-411.iso after searching key word "aspireone" from the head of the house forum (English). And I made a USB thumb drive for boot by another Puppy operation PC. Afterwards, USB memory was able to be booted with aspireone.

I save Personal Storage File(2fs) in USB. It is completely separated with HDD of WindowsXP.

I used a Japanese Localize Kit "ja_JP.UTF8_411_1103.pet".

As I use "Thumb shift keyboard input method" for Japanese input, I installed "anthy-9100c-i686.pet" and "scim-anthy-1.2.4-i686.pet".

The menu had been garbled, I substituted all "DejaVu Sans-12" in ~/.jwm/jwmrc-theme file to "DejaVu Sans 12". Thus, after reboot PC, the menu safely became Japanese.

Built-in Wireless LAN also recognized automatically. It was possible to connect by the WPA/TKIP method. Built-in camera is under investigation.
