The basic configuration is small OneBoxPC similer "HP 2133 Mini-Note PC". Puppy Linux confirmed the start from HDD, the USB-SD card, and CD-ROM. It operated almost while installed.

Audio:
As the sound had not been emitted, volume was "0" that adjusting Zmixer master volume. The sound came to be possible the top and bottom of the mastering volume, and to emit in "Alsamixer" (Call it from the command).

Video:
VESA mode run without problem, and I'm trying to bring out the performance of chipset. I cannot install well though there is a driver such as "Openchrome".

An additional information:

"Openchrome" PET package that I described in my report is uploaded. After install, it recognized "CX700" and operated. I confirmed by "Xorg.0.log".

"Puppy Linux Discussion Form"
Xorg driver update for various cards

(There are drivers for other various Video cards.)

Attention:
After installing, it is necessary to rewrite "Driver" description in xorg.conf. Thus;

I had been used this PC in the parents' family before, but I leave it as the battery pack and the backup of C-MOS run down.

HDD has irregular partitions named 2GB(Win98SE), 2GB(Data) and 6GB(FreeBSD) and there is "LILO" (Even I forgot though I did not know what I wanted to do). I made 6GB-partition for puppy after reformat to ext3.

First, I used a virtual area of Windows(only about 80MB), but capacity was a little and it did not become practical use. Then I newly made a 512MB Linux-swap partition, and I cut off Windows.

Though I started Firefox, but it's behavior was dull and far from comfortable.

I run animation files in USB memory with gxine, but the sound stopped according to the file format and the rate.

Alsamixer supported a pseudo surround (is it OK?) that was the feature of this machine.

I used a BUFFALO LPC3-CLT LAN card first, but operation was unstable (feeding power stops when using it), though I changed to the above-mentioned one. It is the old one, and may be out of order because it overworked before. Though I thought correspondence to a plug-in connection and tried. But it was not good after all(There was no IP by ifconfig).

The power supply was cut without postprocessing when the power switch was pushed. On the other hand, the suspend of Fn+F4 operated.

Though I tried Frugal, but as the rotational speed of HDD was slow, this PC seems to be far to practical use as a whole. In addition, the backup battery of C-MOS had been exchanged before I install Puppy.

As USB boot is unable by the BIOS setting, I use PLoP Boot Manager and dual boot from USB Flash with HDD's XP.
Dependent on: Plpbt.bin, plpbtldr.bin, plpgenbtldr.exe, and contig.exe.

I want to use the touch pad, and it was useless in general purpose synaptics introduced by "Oresama blog". It is "Cordiality" where the cursor returns to former place when the finger is separated.

Puppy did not boot in version 2.13 or 4.20 though it was writing here and there were an operation results about cf-m34 before.

It doesn't become something useful though the CD boot manages to be possible.PC hangs up in the latest version due to memory shortage though I tried to initialize HDD.Made Linux swap by using old Puppy Linux. Afterwards, HDD was able to be initialized. Then installed Puppy linux 430JP. X windows also showed by XGA.

Full installed Puppy. I miss that relaxed feeling to connect to Internet with the modem in Win95. To drop the power supply when shutdown, I added "acpi=force" to Grub/menu.lst.

It is regrettable that interrupts music CD play, though the sound driver is correctly recognized. I think that DMA channel might be a cause, and I'm setting bios variously.

This PC has delimited HDD to four partitions. When seeing from Windows, sda1 is C drive, sda2 is D drive, sd3 is for backups(invisibility) and sda4 is uncertain for me.

Sda2 is made 2 extended partitions with GPartd, and Puppy is installed in the one in Frugal. I make it to dual boot of Windows and Puppy by using Grup4Dos.

When booting Puppy, AR8132 of cable LAN cannot be used. It becomes impossible to use AR8132 even with Windows when rebooting with Windows. Then, I bought Corega USB-LAN adaptor. This can be used with Windows and Puppy. However, it comes to be able to use AR8132 that should be not able to be used by turning off power with Windows again after a while. What on earth has occurred is not understood. Corega can be used at any time because it embarrasses it if LAN cannot use it.

Puppy run without trouble though the state immediately after the installation was anxious because it was a combination that had been put on the market recently.

The video driver selected vesa, but the driver becomes "Intel" when the following drivers are added from forum, and, in addition, a light feeling goes up.

xorg_xorg_full_dri-7.3.pet
xorg-1.6.3-upgrade-vesa-intel-2.8.1-mesa-7.5.1-02.pet

If states before and after the introduction are compared by hdbench-clone, it becomes the following.

total 187395 > 200708 (107%)
CPU-float 66518 > 66503 (100%)
CPU-integer 112370 > 112423 (100%)
Memory 102516 > 96646 (94%)
Video-Rectangle 14250 > 27234 (191%)
Video-Circle 17148 > 4686 (27%)
Video-Text 31867 > 33991 (107%)
Video-Scroll 110 > 220 (200%)
Video-Image 81 > 139 (171%)
Disk-Read 873813 > 1048576 (120%)
Disk-Write 665360 > 616809 (92%)

The scroll change seems to have occurred to change in a light feeling.

The clock scaling is possible by the use of "P4-clockmod". However, there is a delay when operating by the on-demand. It might be too doing because I set it with 1666670 to 208333(eight times).

I/F related to the desk recognizes SATA without trouble.

At first, I thought diskless-use, and booted from Puppy installed in USB flash memory, but the problem of the BIOS setting or BIOS was not able to be booted. I connected HDD and DVD drive.

I booted Puppy 4.3.1JP and used. Most devices with built-in PC were recognized automatically, and cable LAN connection setting clicked Desktop > Connection ... It was easily to set and connect.

The SCIM start key: [KATAKANA HIRAGANA] key(at the right of the space key) and the installation method of 16GB SSD are mentioned elsewhere.

* Caution, 16GB SSD is recognized as ATA HDD.

The merit of SSD is remarkable. Low heat generation! Fast access! Silent! High anti-shock! Power saving(it's SSD)! besides Low-priced (54,523 yen), Lightweight about 1kg, Small size (226mm W x 176mm H), it is extremely comfort, and my recommended article.

It is 80,000 yen or less as built-in BUFFALO 16GB SSD (24,857 yen). The cost performance is extremely high.

'pup.sys was not found' error occurred at install. Therefore, booted after connecting two (USB-CD and genuine IEEECD) and confirming the operation, full installed.

WinXP was considerably unrefined operation because of CPU. There was no operation speed as fast as Puppy (Though it was an individual subjectivity to the end) though tried Win2000. It works smoothly as a net browsing PC now.

Enhanced memory. Installed Puppy quite without trouble. Original network card was not recognized and I used another one(the above-mentioned one. There is no network connector in this PC).

Wireless LAN was able to be connected without trouble. The printer can also print wireless LAN with CUPS. However wiht my EPSON printer, characters related to graphic are printed expands sideways by four times. The print using CUPS becomes a same deal by not only Puppy but also Debian/Ubuntu(please help).

The sound card recognized automatically with soundwizard. Reproduced Youtube by way of experiment, it is a level that can satisfy the sound and the animation speed.

The screen display doesn't appear suddenly from Seamonky while using the mouse wheel (add on USB mouse:automatic recognition). The layer changes on its own and is not displayed even if it returns to former layer. It is displayed with the maximize button again. At present, I think that it is a level that can be used though I don't use a lot.

Problem:

The power supply doesn't cut by the automatic operation when shutdown. The power supply falls when the power switch is pushed after the display "system halted". I don't care because I did a similar experience either in Ubuntu.

The EPSON printer has the problem. CUPS can print test, however, only images are printed drawn out scale in other applications. Texts are displayed without trouble. I use Debian PPD for LP-7900 of EPSON AVASYS.

I did not imagine that Puppy works so comfortably. It seems to take an active part this old PC greatly as subnotebook PC.

Thank you really. Puppy Linux cheers !!

This PC doesn't have a bootable FDD. I copied LiveCD's contents onto HDD with installed Win98, and I booted from the MSDOS mode of Win98 with LINLD(v0.97).

Uunfortunately, neither the pen nor the sound function worked.

I used external PS2 keyboard and mouse. Probably, because of a partition for Save to Disk (hibernation function of BIOS) and parted was not able to be used. It is a slow motion excluding mouse and menu display.

Puppy 431JPqs3 works on a vertial PC. Booting Puppy 431JPqs3 from VirtualBox-3.1.4-57640-Win. The same type as report No.331 (HDD recovery available on Windows).

CPU: CeleronM 1.3GHz, RAM: 512MB, Graphics Card: Intel852GM Onboard, Xserver: Xorg, Resolution: 1024x768x24, 1024x768x16, LAN Card: e100 IntelPro/100VE(MOB) Onboard, LAN Card: ipw2200 IntelPro/Wireless2200BG Onboard, Sound: Intel82801DBM(ICH4), Puppy's version: 4.3.1JPqs3, VirtualBox-3.1.4-57640-Win.exe, Audio: Windows DirectSound(ICH AC97), Network: PCnet-FastIII(NAT), Hooked to PC with USB Connection Card, not used onboard cable and wireless LAN.

Comment

Mounted JPqs3 ISO image to virtual drive of WindowsXPSP3 (VirtualCloneDrive5440), and booted Puppy Linux with VirtualBOX (2.22GB used).

The allocation memories are 192MB of an initial value (WindowsXP starts enough if there are 256MB RAM).

Warning that a virtual machine is 16bit though is 32bit. It seems especially no problems after boot (only 16/24bit can be chosen in JPqs3, and the message goes out even if 24bit is chosen).

Web can be brows by virtualization Puppy.

Gxine went out the error and did not start though inserted rental DVD on the market into built-in DVD drive (It's a question that necessity to replay DVD by virtual Puppy).

* Wireless LAN (Netgear WG-511TA, PCMCIA connection)

Start > Network > Pwireless, It's OK. However,
Desktop > Connection > Network or Wireless LAN, it failed.
The WEP setting seems not to go well though Wireless LAN detects.

* PHS (WX321J, USB connection)

Dial-up is OK, setting as written in the japanese forum.

* PHS (AX420S, CF connection)

As for this, I don't know where to be set. As I will not to use AX420S, I'm not pursued any further.

I report again as components were changed (previous report).

Change points
  • The boot disk is changed from HDD to 1GB CF via CF-IDE conversion board.
  • From 96MB RAM to 256MB.
  • Puppy version 4.3.1JP, kernel-2.6.30.5.

Because expanded memory, swap was lost and it came to be able to use in own way.

It is seen to be enough to listen to the net radio (IP Simul Radio of the topic), and to reproduce mp3 by on memory.

Puppy431 can save settings into USB by CD boot, it is convenient.

After changing HDD, I did triple boot of XP, ubuntu9.04 and Puppy431.

CD BOOT is OK. The HDD installation is as follows.

1: Frugal INSTALL ⇒ ▲

  1. "Recognising media devices....optical failed" (my blurred memory...red-letters), not recognized USB mouse.
  2. The background is not displayed.
  3. If CD is put, (1) and (2) can recognize it.
  4. When starting, it is not possible to read if the pupsave file is made for places other than default.

2: Full INSTALL ⇒ ▲

  1. It is the same as (1) - (4) of Frugal.

3: I installed Puppy follow an explanation of a Japanese page. [ Copy all contents of CD onto an arbitrary folder and execute Grub4Dos ] ⇒ Δ

  1. Not cleared (4) though 1 and 2 were able to be cleared (The file itself is made).
  2. It doesn't boot occasionally or freeze.

"If the swap partition is detected, do you use it while starting without automatically? y/n", welcome in case of being. :-)

Moreover, I think that 4.3.1JPqs3 used as live CD is assumption, but frankly speaking, I felt that it is OS that became hard to please at a dash when trying to install, though it is very easy using for the linux beginners with CD, because it can a lot (for instance, installation) in a variety of methods.

Reply from Shinobar about No.342, 343

Reasons of (1) and (2) are uncertain. (4) is a specification. Frugal is Puppy's own ways, but it is the one good when mastering though doesn't understand easily.

Putting pupsave on places other than the installation destination comes by changing an optional start. Concretely, remove the specification of psubdir that exists in menu.lst.

To put two or more Puppy in the same PC, psubdir specification becomes essential. In that case, the installation place and the place of pupsave should be the same (place specified with psubdir).

I also tried Fullinstall. However, it was not possible to install by causing quite the same error as my self-made machine (my report No.342). I don't know it failed in writing CD, or forgot to set something. I want to make fullinstall succeed by using the re-download and other versions of ISO for the time being.

From a current experience, there is no obstacle in a similar way this time (flugal?). I think that installing this method in PC of some specs easily and more quickly than a full installation. However, thinking the installation on a low memory and poor CPU PC, I want to install not the ram of sfs extract but HDD full.

This is a notebook PC sleeping in closet. I worry about the security problem as it is installed Windows98 (1st). As I have a little curiosity, I installed Puppy Linux. Puppy was not possible to boot because of with error message "pup_431.sfs is not found", though I tried the LiveCD boot from standard PCMCIA connection CD-ROM drive.

CD-ROM drive seems not to be recognized from an actual boot at a while. Afterwards, tried and erred. After connected another USB connection external DVD-ROM drives with this PC, and insert LiveCD. I succeeded recognition and boot by "Twin drive composition" that "Start from PCMCIA drive, and processing is handed over to the USB drive". This work fully took the middle of the night.

Now, universal install on HDD succeeds too. 4GB HDD is used full. Both CD-ROM drive of the PCMCIA connection and USB connection's external DVD-ROM drive are normally recognized. No sound, as I don't recognize sound. Though I thought that I did, but I don't understand well about chip. I think that there are more information. This PC has no LAN built-in interface, I think that I can do nothing but test USB connection's. I don't do yet. However, I feel that will easily recognized by the cheap one on the market.

I upgraded to Windows2000 though the origin was Windows98SE PC. It took three minutes to boot when MS Office and Avast were installed. The HDD access doesn't stop at 30 seconds of three minutes after it starts. I used Live CD of Puppy, because it had become slow.

Uptime from live CD is two minutes. Behavior is felt considerably light by me. There is not a problem either, and the installation was able to advance, and to set wireless LAN card easily only by applying "s:" before the key word.

There are no 256MB memory and because I wanted to study Linux, I made partition for Linux and tried full installation.

Booting failed just after a full installation. Again, startup with live CD and set with Grub4Dos, so it booted safely. However, it becomes impossible for Windows2000 to boot the start screen continuously with the length(even safe mode is not good).

A present problem is to make dual boot with Windows2000 again.

Comment

Because not possible to boot from internal CD drive, I installed Puppy with other PC (Boot by WakePup2 boot FD also fails).

Windows98 displayed "Memory parity error. system halted." and it was not possible to start though I wanted to make to Dual boot (Grub4Dos) environment of Windows 98 and Puppy linux.

Sound building in is automatically recognized as Sound-blaster 16 with Alsa sound wizard.

Wireless LAN was able to be recognized with no problem by setting ESSID and the code.

Windows98 feels about 30 to 40 percent faster the reaction compared with Puppy.

Operation is slowly, but 'Puppy linux' is very interesting.

Comment

No internal FDD and CD drive. Boot from external USB-FD with WakePup2.

As there is no external USB-CD drive, on the way I replaced USB flash memory (installed Puppy) to only one USB port and booted without X.

Created partition and formatted with FDISK as it is. Afterwards, installed GRUB (because universal install did not go well).

Started X, and installed Puppy in internal HDD with FRUGAL mode.

Originally, this is a comp of WindowMe model. But I had not used WindowsMe because I installed Windows2000 in it. I feel that Puppy is slower than Windows2000.

Comment

When installing Puppy, internal memory is 64MB and it run in it's way. However, when booting from internal HDD, I felt very slow. When I checked, expanded 32MB RAM was defective. However, Puppy doesn't stop down and it run. I felt this specs operation more comfortably than Win9x if there were 64MB memory. I wish to express my gratitude to all of Puppy Linux developers and maintainers.

Comment

This Win98SE PC had been left for about five years. (It freezed much often though boot). First, I booted Pup-431JP from CD and confirmed the operation was OK, and initialized HDD, then full installed with puppyinstaller. However, when shutting down, the defective operation is confirmed (Power supply doesn't turn off). Installed Pup-431stdJP of another kernel with Grub4Dos, and confirmed all operation has no problem.

Sensuously, Puppy boots WindowsXP-like speed. The operation feeling is somewhat slow. But there is no stress web browsing and document creation (movies are NG). I wish to express my gratitude for PC of year tenth having revived.

Comment

TOSHIBA English model. Details of spec.

This PC's HDD was not recognized. I thought it's disposal, because it is a problem on not HDD but the MotherBoard side. It revived thanks to Puppy Linux.

Installed Puppy in CFcard, Connected with PC through the PCMCIA card adaptor, I boot Puppy from the PC card and use it. As Puppy is light OS, PC is practical use enough though is low spec.

Various installations were tested. However, if the USB CF flash drive is chosen from UnversalInstaller, Following options are any great difference.

Moreover, Combo-Format is chosen from boot flash USB installer and you may set syslinux.cfg to pmedia=ataflash again.

Comment

This is a home-made PC and OK from Bangkok.

It works very excellently. CD boot is no problem too.

In addition, SOTEC WL7160C(Memory:640MB) and Lenovo R61e(Memory:1.5GB) also run lightly.

Comment

I installed Puppy in PC before the age, and there is no sense of incompatibility and works lightly.

I made it a server, however, when photos are sent to the server by using FFFTP, they are not displayed why. X sign adheres to some photos. But when time passes, everything is displayed. Around here like specs shortage (memory cannot be expanded any further).

The worried LAN adaptor was recognized without trouble, and it was good. What does the following do with Puppy Linux :-)

I wanted to use old note PC, and installed Puppy. The trouble that X doesn't work come one after another though distributions such as DSL, Debian, and Knoppix were able to be installed. However, only putty was able to be installed.

Comment

15.4 type 1680x1050, 80GB, DVD+-R/RW, note PC with built-in GPU. ASUS Z7100VP (box). Is the DOSPARA system treated? because there is "Prime" on the main body (It was also in Faith and Epson Direct).

800x600 starts with CD boot (1400x1050x16 can be chosen). The width selections go out by XorgWizard but 1680x1050 is missing. The Linux video driver on the manufacturer page is not trying.

Frugalinstalled in the rest of HDD, and DVD can play with xgine. It connects with the access point of wireless LAN.

There were reports that barebone note PC "do not boot", "solder melts(because of internal heat)" "screen NG" in 2005-2006. The liquid crystal is beautiful in it's own way(Do not compare it with these days luster liquid crystal). Eyes are not tired because of darkness :-)

Edit:

In the beginning, [eth0 IntelPro/Wireless2200BG(Onboard)][eth1 Marvell YUKON Gigabit(Onboard)], but recognition order was changed, 1680x1050x16 is also OK.
