About Puppy Linux

www.puppylinux.com

Puppy Linux was created by Australian Barry Kauler in 2003. It is one of the Linux distribution with a lot of useful applications although being small in size (about 105MB/ version4.3.1). It has been translated into various languages in the world and many derivative distributions.

Main characteristics

  • You can easily install to USB, Zip or hard drive media.
  • Booting from CD (or DVD), the CD drive is then free for other purposes.
  • Puppy does not need hard drive even if you boot it from CD,you can save everything back to the CD.
  • Booting from USB Flash drive, minimize writes to extend the life indefinitely.
  • Extremely friendly for Linux newbies.
  • Boot up and run extraordinarily fast.
  • Have all the applications needed for daily use.
  • Will just work, no hassles.
  • Will breath new life into old PCs.
  • Load and run totally in RAM for diskless thin stations.

The size becomes slightly big with extra drivers and Japanese environment(version 4.3.1JP is about 119MB).

About this site

The Japanese version of Puppy Linux has been released to the public from this site. This Puppy Linux Japanese Edition is to provide Japanese environment for those users who are interested in Japanese. It is not perfect, and the translation of Japanese is not perfect either. But you can use this Japanese version as the base to modify it to your own taste quite easily. This is one of the real pleasure of using Puppy Linux. We release this Japanese Edition as "Raw stone" for you to sculpture. Because Puppy Linux's Japanese documents are very few, we are planning to increase them. (This site is created on 8 June, 2007)

Message from the creator of Puppy Linux

I have no objection to translation of Puppy Linux to Japanese.

Hardware requirements

CPU: Pentium 166MMX, RAM: 128MB, CDROM: 20x and up.

The system works at 128MB of RAM, but it will be more comfortable if you have more than 256MB of RAM. Puppy will use Swap partition if it exists.

Notes

You run Defrag to the NTFS format partition in WindowsXP, before save your personal data in it.

To compile and install favorite software from source, you need a development environment - devx_XXX.sfs file. Puppy read it at boot, when you put it to the partition same as your personal starge file named "pup_save.2fs". (XXX is your Puppy version number). devx_431.sfs is about 90MB.

Download

You can download the Puppy Linux Japanese Edition from the following sites.

You can also download Japanized Application sources from the following sites.

You can download the Puppy Linux Original Edition from the following sites.

You can also purchase Puppy-CD(English version) via mail.

Quick usage

CD version

Burn a downloaded ISO image file to CD. The ISO file cannot be used only with the copy in CD. A free software called BurnCDCC is easy to burn on Windows.

If it is a CD bootable PC, put it in the CD drive and switch it on.

  • The monitor will display "boot: " and it will starts automatically 5 seconds later.
  • A choice screen of "keyboard layout" appears in English. You choose "jp106" with the cursor control key of the up and down.
  • A choice screen of "X server" appears in English text. Recent PC can choose "Xorg". When "Xorg" does not work, choose "Xvesa".
  • Window manager JWM starts.
  • Differently from other distributions, the setting of the additional user is not performed. It starts in root.

Using "Grub4Dos" from 4.3JP, more easy to start Puppy Japanese.

When you cannot boot Puppy from a CD, change the boot order in the BIOS setup. Booting from CD drive should be the first order.

Japanese word input method

Click "keyboard icon" in the taskbar, Japanese can be input by selecting "NIHONGO-Canna" or simply press [HANKAKU/ZENKAKU] key on keyboard.

Exit

Click "Menu" button at the lower left corner of the screen, and choose "Shut down" > "Swich off the computer". Puppy will ask you whether you DO NOT SAVE or SAVE your personal data and settings, and ask where you want to save them. Choose the option and select "OK". The personal storage file is saved as "pup_save.2fs" to your desired hard drive. After this first running of your Puppy Linux, the personal file will be updated and saved automatically. When exiting, the power supply is not turned off automatically. Please eject the CD and turn off the power.

You can shutdown easily with Japanese GUI from version 4.2
